Thai Yoga Massage

Thai Yoga Massage

Thai massage is a unique form of bodywork dating back to ancient times over 2,500 years ago. It was originally practised in temples in Thailand by Buddhist monks as a means of invigorating the mind and body.

It is ideal for anyone regardless of their age, state of health or level of flexibility and is one of the few types of massage that can be carried out during pregnancy.

Massage is one of the three main branches of the ancient Thai Medical system. It is based upon the ancient belief that life force (prana) circulates around the body in ten main pathways (energy lines).

Blockages along these pathways result in pain, or disease on both a physical and emotional level. Thai Yoga Massage works to stimulate, open and balance the flow of energy through the lines to assist the body in its natural tendency towards self-healing and harmony. This is achieved through rhythmic acupressure; mobilization of joints; passive stretches and applied Yoga-like stretches.

Benefits

Whether Thai Yoga Massage is used for healing or relaxation purposes, it definitely has an overall therapeutic effect, improving suppleness, flexibility and joint mobility, and enabling the client to 'let go' of tension held in the body.

·                              Relief of muscular pain

·                              Improved circulation

·                              Improved function of internal organs

·                              Enhanced well-being

·                              Increased vitality

·                              Relief from pregnancy-related stresses

Thai Yoga Massage has proven useful for a range of muscoskeletal problems including lower back pain and sciatica-type pain, neck and shoulder tension, over-use injuries, and joint arthritis. It is also useful for treating circulatory problems, headaches, insomnia, menstrual problems, digestive disorders and asthma.

What to expect

Thai Yoga Massage is practised on a mat on the floor. There is no need for the use of oil and the receiver wears loose, warm and comfortable clothes that don't restrict movement. It is best to avoid heavy meals before the treatment and to drink plenty of water afterwards as toxins are released and these need to be flushed away.

Thai Yoga Massage can be performed in a minimum of 1½ hours, but a longer, more extensive massage is performed in 2 hours. The whole body is treated, starting at the feet by limbering, relaxing and preparing the body in a logical sequence of yoga-style stretches and postures. The therapist uses a combination of hands, feet and elbows to apply pressure along the energy lines.

The treatment is mainly concerned with balancing the energy systems of the body. It can take 4-5 days for this re-balance to be complete. Thai Yoga Massage normally leaves the receiver feeling energised, calm and centred, but changes within the physical, mental and emotional body do take place over a period of time, so is particularly beneficial when received as a course of treatments.
